In cooperation with Oudomxay Hospital, Lao Rehabilitation Foundation has agreed to provide support for health care in remote areas of Oudomxay Province.

The first mobile team composed of Lao health care professionals and representatives of LRF visited Beng District in May 2008. One of seven districts in Oudomxay province, Beng is located at 65 km of Oudomxay.  With a population of 33,384 (2008), most people are living along the Mekong and Beng rivers in 65 villages of which 24 are not accessible by road. There is generally no electricity and the public health care system is limited to 1 poorly equipped district hospital and 6 dispensaries.

The team of two dentists, one ophthalmologist, one ENT specialist, several nurses and LRF staff examined and treated 741 patients. LRF provided equipment, supplies, medicine and general logistic for the mission.

Plans are to visit La, Houn, Pakbeng and Beng districts in September 2008 to examine and provide treatment to an expected 2,100 patients.

We knew that Oudomxay province is home to many poor people living in remote areas with limited access to health care. The province’s population of 272,297 (2007) includes 60% Kamu, 25% Lao Loum and 15% Hmong ethnic minorities. The mobile health care for dental, E.N.T and eye diseases project is a cooperation between Oudomxay Hospital and Lao Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc. it is a large mission that combines an ENT doctor, dentists, ophthalmologists and nurses equipped with modern mobile equipment and all necessary medicine to treat E.N.T., dental and eye diseases.
