Simmano Villages

Simmano, a small community located in the Hatxayfong District, on the bank of the Mekong River, is a conglomerate of four small villages named Simmano Neau, Simmano Tay, Khouydeng and Nalong, it is home to 983 families with a total population of 6,302 people. (October 2002). The primary source of income among villagers comes from fishing the Mekong River and cultivating vegetables. The average income per capita was estimated at $16.00 per year in October 2002. The villages are hardly accessible during monsoon season.

Evacuated from the area to Thailand in 1852, during the Hor Flag war, the inhabitants of these communities eventually returned to their ancestral grounds in 1897 to establish the four villages. Four Buddhist temples were erected in the area, the oldest and most important being Wat Manosila, located on the Mekong riverbank. Headed years ago by a woman of high morals named Sim, the temple always played a central role in the daily live of the community. The name Simmano derives from her name Sim and Mano which means beautiful mind.
